Setting goals is one of the most important steps when you want to succeed. They help you to identify what exactly you want to achieve and to focus on what really matters.
First, you need to identify the fundamental reason why you are studying a foreign language. Why do you want to learn Spanish? What do you do when you are able to have conversations in Spanish? When you have figured out the answers to these questions, you have discovered your main goal. This is the reason why you invest time, money and energy in studying. Remember to be honest to yourself since there are no right or wrong answers.
The next step is to divide your main goal into smaller pieces. Here are a few tips that can help you find your main goal and divide it into smaller steps:
• Focus on concrete things that you can do with your language skills. Your goal can be for example to be able to order coffee in Spanish.
• Set your goals high, but do not challenge yourself too much. If you set your daily or weekly goal too high and are not able to meet it, your motivation can drop, and you might even stop studying altogether.
• Use positive words when writing down your goals. Write your goals so that they seem achievable to you.
The most effective goals are set at a short time frame, they are precise and relatively challenging. Precise milestones help you to know exactly what you need to do – and therefore you will probably act accordingly.
I wish you great goals for the fall!
