The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is a widely used six-level scale for describing the development of foreign language proficiency. The steps between the levels get longer towards the end of the scale. Levels A1 and A2 can be reached quite quickly, but not even all native speakers are on level C2.
CEFR skill levels and descriptions:
- A1, A2: You are a basic user of the language. You can get by as a tourist and handle typical situations using the language.
- B1, B2: You are an independent user of the language. You can work in the target language.
- C1, C2: You are a proficient user of the language. Your focus is on expanding your professional vocabulary, learning jargon related to your hobbies etc.
Familiarity with the CEFR levels is helpful especially when looking for courses or learning materials at the right level for you. It also helps if you can describe your language skills according to the CEFR in a job application.
